Common Issues & Solutions

Quick checks for the most common problems.

Radios cannot hear each other

  • Check that all radios are on the same channel
  • Check that the privacy code (CTCSS/DCS) matches, or switch it off
  • Check that the volume is up and the battery charged
  • Move closer or higher; walls and hills block the signal

Battery runs out quickly

  • Charge fully with the original charger before first use
  • Switch off VOX and keypad tones if you do not need them
  • Older NiMH or Li-ion packs lose capacity; replace them
  • Keep radios off when stored for a long time

Hearing other people on the channel

  • PMR446 is shared; change channel or privacy code
  • A privacy code filters what you hear, it does not encrypt
  • For private channels consider licensed DMR or PoC
  • Ask us to plan channels for a large team

PoC radio does not connect

  • Check that the SIM has active mobile data
  • Check mobile coverage where you are
  • Restart the radio and wait for it to log in
  • Contact us to check the platform account

Frequently Asked Questions

Not for PMR446 walkie-talkies. PMR446 radios use 446.0–446.2 MHz at a maximum of 0.5 W ERP and can be used without a licence anywhere in the EU, including Greece and Cyprus. Professional VHF/UHF and DMR radios on their own frequencies need a frequency assignment from EETT in Greece.
It depends on the terrain more than the radio. The kilometre figures on PMR446 boxes are measured in open terrain with a clear line of sight. In a town, inside buildings or among trees, expect a few hundred metres to a couple of kilometres. Licensed radios with more power and repeaters reach further; PoC radios reach wherever there is mobile coverage.
PoC means Push-to-Talk over Cellular. A PoC radio looks and works like a walkie-talkie, but it sends voice over the 3G/4G mobile network or Wi-Fi using a SIM card. Range is wherever the network reaches, and no frequency licence is needed. It needs a data SIM and a subscription to a PoC platform for each radio.
Two running costs: mobile data on the SIM card and the PoC platform subscription per radio. Voice over PoC uses little data, but the exact plan depends on your operator and how much your team talks. Ask us for a quote that includes radios, SIM data and the platform.
PMR446 if you need short range, no licence and no running costs (families, shops, small sites). DMR if you need private channels, more range and a radio system you own, and you can apply for an EETT licence (security, industry, municipalities). PoC if your team is spread across a city, several sites or the whole country and there is mobile coverage (logistics, patrols, hotel groups).
Analogue PMR446 radios of any brand can talk to each other on the same channel, as long as the privacy code (CTCSS/DCS) matches or is switched off. DMR radios from different brands can usually talk on the same frequency and colour code in digital mode, but advanced features may not carry over. PoC radios only talk to radios on the same PoC platform.
